Some of the key purposes of a synagogue are to provide space for its community
"to meet, to study and to pray."

The Liberal Judaism website (www.liberaljudaism.org) has a selection of books for sale, including the current daily prayer book "Siddur Lev Chadash" and the High Holydays prayer book "Machzor Ruach Chadashah."  LJ can also provide reading lists for those intending to convert to Judaism or who are interested in improving their religious knowledge.

Another good source of Jewish books is Manor House Books, based at the Sternberg Centre in north-west London, which also does mail order.  See: www.manorhousebooks.co.uk.  Telephone: 0208 349 9484.

A good, simple introduction to Biblical Hebrew, suitable for self-study, is "The First Hebrew Primer" by Simon, Resnikoff and Motzkin.  There is also an answer book.  Available from Manor House Books.
